Over the past year or so I’ve been indulging myself in live musical performances around the northeast. Some folks are into gaming, some like sports, but I don’t think I’ve met someone who didn’t enjoy music. So, as a music lover I took the opportunity this summer to attend the 10th Anniversary of Camp Bisco and experience a ton of artists including Lotus, Neon Indian, Nero, Four Tet, Bassnectar and many more electronic performers. When I wasn’t totally and completely distracted by the non-stop music and party, I tried to snap some photos at a few shows. I usually don’t take my Canon SLR to these types of shows because of the fragility of the equipment, but I was able to get some really interesting shots that could easily be used as wallpaper. Check out some of my highlight shots below.

Not too long ago I released “It’s Working,” marking the opening of a collection of wallpapers inspired by Congratulations. Here is the second piece in the series. This piece of art is based on the final part of “Siberian Breaks.”

Breaking into its final moments, the song shifts pace into a spacey-trance of hypnotic drum beats and psychedelic sounds. The intricate melodies all blend together and sooth the ears. Download the wallpaper here, grab the iPhone version here.

Congratulations, the second major release from MGMT, has become one of my all-time favorite albums.

In order to be successful at what I do, I need to constantly keep myself organized and give myself the most simple way to keep my ideas in order. Until very recently, I’ve been using a combination of Things for iPhone and Evernote for Mac and iPhone. I was skeptical to try something different but, after reading about TaskPaper in many blog posts, I decided to take the plunge and get the TaskPaper iPhone app.

One of the reasons I wasn’t so happy with Things (or any other To-Do app I have tried thus far) was the method used to input new tasks. You have to worry about tags, notes, and due-dates if you want to get the most out of the application that you paid for. All of these separate parameters are controlled through contextual menus that are time consuming to use. TaskPaper improves the interface for handling all of this information by basically removing it. In a new note you use the return key to cycle through the types of information you can enter; all plain text. There are three options: Project, Task and Note. TaskPaper processes them based on the spacing and punctuation (dashes in front of tasks, colons after projects, nothing for notes) that you would see in a plain text editor. The options are limited, but the speed at which you can add new items is unparalleled by any other app of this nature.

If you are simply using TaskPaper to organize your to-do lists you may feel shortchanged. After I did a little bit of research, I learned about the many things that can be done with the SimpleText.ws syncing service that is integrated with the app. Now on my Macbook Pro I use the tiny SimpleText menu-item application to download all my Taskpaper notes from my iPhone to a folder on my laptop. The SimpleText application automatically synchronizes the text files up to a server when any changes are saved locally on my Mac now. I have hooked Notational Velocity in on my Mac to write and read files from my SimpleText syncing folder; allowing me to edit files quickly and easily in Notation. I can keep all my tasks organized on my mobile phone, and see them on my Mac.

If you have ever used Notational Velocity before, you already know that the interface is very minimalist and extremely functional. The part of Notation that jumps out the most is the combined search bar and new document creation. You simply press escape to make the search bar active, type the name of the document you want to create or open and hit return to begin editing it. There is no need to take your fingers off the keys, especially if you assign a shortcut to open Notation.

Taking notes in plain text files is extremely convenient. With school right around the corner, I am buckling down my workflow to make it as tight and efficient as possible. Taking notes will be as simple as opening my laptop, hitting the (self-assigned) hotkey CTRL + CMD + Q and I can begin typing my notes. If there is anything I need to find in my database of notes, I can easily search for it using Notation. It is the perfect note taking companion for school. All notes are saved constantly automatically and synced up to the server and to my iPhone if I need to access them on the go.

My new workflow with Taskpaper for iPhone and Notational Velocity syncing over SimpleText.ws is something that I’d highly recommend to anyone who is a fast thinker. It started for me as a task manager much like Things and I was skeptical of the barebones styling. This was only until I realized that the simplicity led me to become even more easily organized. The apps are beginning to grow into more of an environment that I use to process my thoughts into organized pieces of writing. Notational Velocity in particular is going to be a key note taking tool for me in school. The combination is an incredibly cheap (almost free) way to keep your thoughts and tasks in order.

A few years ago, I met Nate Hicks while I was playing Battlefield 2. We have been good friends ever since. Nate Hicks is a student working to become a graphic designer. Occasionally we collaborate to create something great; this time it was his own website.

When he told me he wanted a website I started to get excited. I told him to make a mockup and I’ll make it happen. Many ideas were bounced around and many mockups were designed before we both agreed that we had reached the best solution.

I’m extremely excited for this website to be out in the wild. It is a website I am proud of and I’m glad it could be for such a great friend. Give Nate some love, visit his new website and keep him in mind if you need to hire a graphic designer in the future.

After my initial doubts and annoyances, I still got my hands on an iPhone 4 as soon as I could. I’ve had the phone wrapped in an Apple Bumper for a few weeks now and there isn’t a single visible scratch on either side of the phone.
iPhone 4. A passing glance at the new Apple devices webpage reveals a barrage of one-liners directed at the potential buyer. “The most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever.” “No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.” “The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.” For the buyers who aren’t the most technically advanced (heck, that’s sorta one of their niche markets, isn’t it?), these marketing claims could spell tragedy.

True to yearly Apple tradition, the launch of their newest smartphone was plagued with another flavor of disappointment for many. Even while they know that because of the huge following of the iPhone, there will be a monumental amount of sales, they never seem to produce enough units for launch. I may be stepping beyond my knowledge here and this is pure speculation, so correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like the perfect way for Apple to create a huge amount of last-minute frenzy hype for their new product launch. They create a demand. People need the glorified phone. They are willing to wait in line for hours and days to be the first person with the latest offering from Cupertino.

It’s sort of sickening that people are like this. However, I realize that I myself am like this as well. I am tied into the Apple ecosystem so tightly that it is a scary thought to leave it. I bought the Macbook Pro; I still love it. Got the iPod, switched to iTunes; still love the iPod. Finally leapt to iPhone and now after almost two years on the device part of me is dying to get my hands on version 4. I can stay comfortably within all of the services I already use. It ties in with my Mac and I don’t have to migrate my tediously organized music collection to a new music manager. Everything is going to work as expected and I know I’m going to enjoy the jump from iPhone 2G to iPhone 4. The other part of me is trying to be adventurous. Buy an Android phone and get on a safer carrier.

The option to switch to Android was always sort of farfetched to me. I never took it seriously until just recently when reading some comments on a popular tech blog. My eyes were opened. After all the years salivating over the newest iterations of iOS and the iPhone itself, I always ignored the utility that is lost with the design choices made by the notorious Jonathan Ive. The newest complaint against the latest iPhone is how easy the glass is to break. I have dismissed this until today. After some thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make any sense for the backside of a phone to be made out of glass. Apple found it so necessary to tout the strength of the glass, they put it on the back of the phone. They were so egotistical about their new mystical “comparable in strength to sapphire crystal” glass that they had to make their phone twice as likely to shatter in one way or another.

I knew that I was ignoring these things, but I brushed them off thinking to myself “just don’t drop your phone.” While this may be true, everyone makes mistakes. The new even thinner iPhone might slip right out of your hand. Oh wait, buy a case, right? Maybe the incredibly expensive to manufacture cellphone that you are marketing as having the strongest glass on the planet should actually be built to last. As much as a lot of us love our Apple products, there comes a point when you realize that everything Apple does gets sugarcoated. If Microsoft tried to pull a lot of the same choices Apple does, they would be attacked ruthlessly. They’ve gotten lazy and the last thing I want to see is the trend being carried over to the Macintosh.

Quit trying to be so over the top pretty, Apple.
